How does a legend evolve? It stands the test of time. Tucker's has been a landmark fixture of the Downtown Eastside since 1948. Mr. John Tucker was a visionary, initially opening Tucker's as a hot dog and hamburger stand which by the 70's, through popularity and hard work, transformed into a high class, no gimmicks, cool - not trendy - cocktail lounge. A place where you could be yourself in an atmosphere and vibe that brought out “a parking lot full of Cadillac's and patrons in their finest leisure suits.”
Through the years, ownership has changed hands and the landscape of the city has moved some of the “regulars” out of downtown. Though the world has changed outside its doors, Tucker's has survived. The new owners understand you don't fool too much with a legend; sometimes all you need to do is give it a breath of fresh air.
With a newly remodeled, New Orleans inspired, covered patio - new life has been given to “Uncle John's” food stand. With the addition of the outside patio, the kitchen has re-opened, serving Jambalaya, Po' Boys, Red Beans and Rice, Chicory brewed coffee, and hamburgers and rib-eyes grilled to order. If you are visiting San Antonio or a SA local, it's a quick trip up E. Houston, passing under the Fitzgibbons' Light Channels, and over the rail road tracks to the Historic Tucker's Kozy Korner; where over 60 years later everyone is still welcomed.
